One of America's most critically acclaimed filmmakers, Martin has directed over 30 films. Born in New York City in 1942, he grew up in the tough downtown neighbourhood of Little Italy, which later provided the inspiration for several of his films.

Martin graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, and received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University, where he wrote the script for what became his first feature film, Who's That Knocking At My Door? Since then he has made such classic films as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas, which was nominated for six Academy Awards.

In 1997, Martin received the prestigious American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, and in 2003 he received his 5th Oscar nomination as Best Director for his work on Gangs of New York.

He is currently in production on his latest film, The Aviator, a biopic of Howard Hughes starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett, due for release in 2004.
