Armin Mueller-Stahl - Sigmund FreudArmin Mueller-Stahl is one of Germany's leading actors, with plenty of character and sensitivity, and is now becoming a familiar face in American films. Once a highly successful film and stage actor in East Germany, he was blacklisted by the government and emigrated to West Germany in 1980. Finding ample work in that country's film industry, he appeared in such films as Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Lola (1981) and Veronika Voss (1982), Andrzej Wajda's A Love in Germany (1984), Angry Harvest and Colonel Redl (both 1985).

After making an impressive American film debut as Jessica Lange's father in Music Box (1989), Stahl was featured as the lead in Midnight Cop (1989), and subsequently took a number of strong character parts in Kafka, Night on Earth (both 1991), The Power of One (1992), Utz, The House of the Spirits (both 1993), and A Pyromaniac's Love Story (1995), and had a starring role in The Last Good Time (also 1995). One of his more prolific earlier roles was his touching portrayal of the kindly Jewish patriarch in Avalon (1990).

Stahl is probably best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in Shine (1996), alongside Geoffrey Rush. Other recent work includes The X-Files (1998), the sci-fi thriller The Thirteenth Floor (1999), and Mission To Mars (2000). He has recently finished work on the drama The Story of an African Farm alongside Richard E. Grant.
